Asthma and COPD affect an estimated 590 million people worldwide, with an additional 114 million affected by COVID-19 from March 2020 to March 2021. Devices used in the diagnosis and treatment of these and other respiratory disorders include mechanical ventilators and pulmonary function testing systems.
Pulmonary conditions that may require respiratory therapy include acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema), cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, respiratory failure, restrictive lung disease, tuberculosis (TB), and COVID-19. Non-pulmonary conditions that may require continuous respiratory therapy include neuromuscular disorders such as those associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, poliomyelitis, scoliosis, and spinal cord injury. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the two most prevalent respiratory diseases, asthma and COPD, affect more than 590 million people worldwide.
Device types utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of these pulmonary conditions include mechanical ventilators and pulmonary function assessment products.
Overview
Asthma and COPD affect an estimated 590 million people worldwide, with an additional 114 million affected by COVID-19 from March 2020 to March 2021. Devices used in the diagnosis and treatment of these and other respiratory disorders include mechanical ventilators and pulmonary function testing systems. The combined global market for full-featured mechanical ventilators was estimated at $850m in 2019, with explosive multifold growth in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and an expected return to typical growth patterns beginning in 2021. In the pulmonary function testing systems market, closure of testing facilities due to COVID-19 resulted in a significant revenue loss for major competitors. Although many laboratories reopened in late 2020, ongoing safety precautions continue to contribute to a slow market recovery. This report provides a discussion of products, current/forecast markets, competitors, and opportunities in these global markets for the US, five major European markets, Japan, and rest-of-world markets for 2019–25.
